February 22 & 23, 1979

Beginning with the 1979 Race, it was decided to hold the Jr Iditarod® to the Senior Division and lowering the age group to 14 through 17. Maximum team size would remain at 10. The trail ran from Knik Lake to Pt McKinzie with a mandatory layover at Point McKenzie and return to Knik Lake. Total trail was approximately 90 miles total. During the race, temperatures dipped to -26 on the back trail and -50 at Pt. McKenzie. Race Marshal Don Rosevear
