This year was again a very close call on moving the race start from the Wasilla area up the highway due to weather conditions and lack of snow in the area. However, with a lot of hard work and good luck we were able to start the race at the Settler's Bay Golf Course near Knik. The weather was primarily overcast and ranged from the lower 20's to the lower 40's with trails from fairly hard and fast, to soft and slower. The area around Trail Lakes had 14 feet of snow only a short time before the race, but with a lot of effort by our trail crew, Eagle Song, and Yentna Station roadhouses, the trail was in good condition by race day. The area around Settler's bay was marginal as to snow, but the weather held off just enough for us to make the start possible in our traditional start area. Our total trail distance this year was measured by GPS at 150.6 miles. Several of our contestants had the misfortune of missing trail markers on the return leg of the race which resulted in a very extended race, and some are listed as Official Finishers with no recorded times as it was decided that due to circumstances it was best to move the finish line back to enable them to finish in time for the banquet and for safety concerns. It should be noted that all of these mushers traveled the race distance and are fully entitled to be considered as finishers of the Junior Iditarod.

For the last several years Richard Plack has been one of our volunteer amateur radio operators and coordinated volunteer work with the other HAM operators with MARA (Matanuska Amateur Radio Association) that have been the backbone of our communications system.
