February 25 - 26, 2006

Due to lack of snow, the race start and finish had to be moved to Willow Lake and the Willow Community Center. Weather was snowing and overcast Saturday morning, degrading into white-out conditions in the early afternoon in some areas with race temperatures down to -25 F at night and a high of +17 F during the day. Sunday started off overcast and foggy, but became clear and sunny in the early afternoon. Due to a low ceiling, race personnel could not be flown out to the Eagle Song and Yentna Station checkpoints, and essential personnel were transported by snowmobile until the bulk could be flown out in the late afternoon. The trail was hard, fast, superbly marked, and the river very smooth. Snow cover was adequate, but marginal at the start, though trail conditions were good and only improved as Saturday progressed and another four inches of snow was falling as the teams started.
